Played by: Emily Maccomber Born: February 15, 1930 Known for: Attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford on September 22, 1975, just 17 days after Squeaky Fromme attempted to Assassinate him. What Happened: Sara Jane Moore was a bookkeeper for an organization founded by Randolph Hearst called “PIN” or People in Need and she was also an FBI informant. In 1975 Moore had been evaluated by the Secret Service and her illegal handgun was confiscated. Then, on September 22, 1975, she bought a new gun and fired at President Ford from while standing across the street from the St. Francis Hotel. She narrowly missed due to the sight on her new gun being off. Moore fired a second shot and Oliver Sipple, a bystander and ex-marine dove and pulled her towards the ground. Moore plead guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. Also: Moore was released from prison on December 31, 2007, having served 32 years of her sentence. When Moore was sentenced in 1975, she replied, “Am I sorry I tried? Yes and no. Yes, because it accomplished little except to throw away the rest of my life. And no, I'm not sorry I tried, because at the time it seemed a correct expression of my anger.” Then, in 2007, when she was asked again about her crime, she stated, “I am very glad I did not succeed. I know now that I was wrong to try.” |
