Known for: Attempted Assassination of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 15, 1933
What Happened: Italian born Guiseppe Zangara attempted to assassinate president Franklin D. Roosevelt during an impromptu speech in Miami, Florida. Zangara was a short man, at only 5 feet tall, so he had to stand on a folding chair to see over the crowd to get a shot at the President. Zangara fired off several shots, hitting Chicago Mayor, Anton Cermak, in the process. Cermak, on the way to the hospital, allegedly told President Roosevelt, “I'm glad it was me instead of you.”
Also: In jail, Zangara confessed and stated, “I have the gun in my hand. I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists.” When the judge sentenced him to death by electric chair, Zangara's reply was “You give me electric chair. I no afraid of that chair! You one of capitalists. You is crook man too. Put me in electric chair. I no care!” Zangara was executed on March 20, 1933.
