Equinox Backstage: Carter Edward Smith

Here at Equinox Theatre Company, we are gearing up as we get closer to opening night of Bubble Boy: The Musical! We can’t wait to introduce Colorado audiences to this hilarious and really very heartfelt musical comedy. Yes, this is a Regional Premiere, which means you can be among the very first people in Colorado to catch Bubble Boy: The Musical! Plus, if you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, be sure to read our exclusive interview with Bubble Boy writer/creator Cinco Paul!

Today, we are excited to present another interview – this time with the Bubble Boy himself! Carter Edward Smith is stepping into the Bubble for this show, and we couldn’t be happier to have him on our stage! You might remember him from a couple truly stand-out performances last year, including The Great American Trailer Park Musical and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.  Now, as he prepares himself for this premiere role, lets get to know him a bit better and find out why he’s excited to step into the Bubble:
Equinox Theatre: Why is this role special to you?
Carter Edward Smith: Jimmy is an exaggerated version of myself. It’s always a growing experience to play elements of who you really are when you are playing a character. I also love that I get to play this role with Equinox. They have become like a family to me.

ET: What is it about the Bubble Boy that you think people can relate to?
CES: Whether we all want to admit it or not, we all have some variation of a bubble that we are living in or constantly trying to stay out of. I also think that parents are going to relate to Jimmy’s Mom. She is a bit extreme with how protective she is, but it’s coming from a good place.
ET: What song in the show is your favorite?
CES: “One More Mile”. It is so much fun to be in and even more fun to sing. It has a gospel feel to it which means I get to riff. Mission accomplished.
ET: How has the rehearsal process been going?
CES: It’s been fantastic. Our creative team is very supportive and also brilliant. They clearly have a heart for the show, which makes a huge difference.
ET: Why do you think Equinox audiences will love this show?
CES: Because it’s not your typical romantic comedy whatsoever. Bug Audiences love our shows because we do things that are out there. This show definitely fits that bill. It’s equally funny and sweet.
ET: How do you prepare for a role like this?
CES: So much of this role is about listening to the other characters and reacting genuinely. I’ve also been working with my voice teacher every week, and that has been a game changer. Aside from that, I’m just going out there and being my nerdy self.
ET: Tell us about the rest of the cast – how has it been working with them?
CES: It’s a great mix of people I’ve done shows with before, people I’ve always wanted to work with, and new faces that I am very happy to be working with for the first time. We all get along well, and everyone supports and encourages each other. It’s been a blast.
ET: Ok – lightning round:
